What Is A Why?
This is one of my favorite subjects to talk about – finding your WHY! Or maybe even revisiting your why if you think you’ve already discovered yours. Until about 9 years ago, I had no idea what a “why” was. But it’s so important to know what this is and be on top of it in your life.
I have two sons ready to graduate from college and go off into the real world. It’s so important for them to know what their why is as they begin their new phase of life. You better believe I’ve been having conversations with them about this!
So what exactly is your why? Your “why” is the purpose, cause, or belief that drives you. We all have it deep down inside. It’s NOT a cheesy sales pitch. It’s not a 30 second elevator pitch. It’s not a one-liner. It’s your truth. Your passion. Your reason for waking up every day!
Not To Be Confused With Your Goals
Here’s a fun fact. We don’t get burned out because of what we do. We get burned out because we forget why we do it. That’s why it’s important to find what drives you. There is always something in there that you can refer to when you need a little pick-me-up. A little motivation and a reminder of why you’re doing what you’re doing.
Here are a few more things to think about. First of all, finding your why isn’t easy. And don’t confuse it with your goals.
I want you to do some introspection and ask yourself these questions…
- If you won the lottery today, what would you do?
- What do you believe strongly in?
- What would you do if you knew that you couldn’t fail?
- What gets you excited and doesn’t feel tedious?
- What value or beliefs do you hold dear?
- What makes you come alive?
Now, let me say this. Whatever you answered to those questions, remember, those are your goals. Those are not your why.
Daily Affirmations
Most people who have a good grasp on their why do not answer these questions with things, because things aren’t what matter. Rather, when your enthusiasm becomes contagious, people will want what you have. They will want to drink the Kool-Aid. They’ll want to hop on the train you’re on. But when people quit something easily, I can almost guarantee that they don’t have a strong grasp on their why.
Something that works well for me to keep my why in mind is daily affirmations. I’m all about saying verbal affirmations to yourself. I actually developed a set of daily affirmations that are delivered right to your email that are so very helpful in reminding yourself of your value and worth. You should check them out!
Symbols Are A Daily Reminder
Now, words are important, but for your why, symbols are even more important. They are so powerful. Even pictures – anything physical or tangible that you can immediately connect to your why.
For example, I have a license plate that says “PURPOS.” I’ve had it for 6 years, and I’ll always have it. I know that my why is for people to discover their purpose. I want them to know that they’re made for greatness and for them to stop comparing themselves to others. And my license plate is my constant reminder of that!
We all have a responsibility to live out our why. How can you live out yours?
Some Examples Of Your Why
Do you want some examples of some possible “whys” to help you think of one? Here goes!
To show people they can be confident. To show people that they can be independent. To show people they can do anything. To help others, and to put them before yourself. Maybe it’s to connect with each other. To show people that there are a ton of possibilities out there.
In my coaching business, I love to show people that the sky is the limit. To show people how to be alive or how to better exist in the world. To dare to achieve more. To make a difference.
These are all examples of a person’s why. If you haven’t discovered yours yet, I challenge you to sit quietly and ask yourself, what is my truth? What is my purpose? What drives me every day? What is my passion? What is my reason for waking up?
Let’s Connect!
